The Bristol-App Gap-Middlebury gap ride is a classic sport or sport touring ride, with plenty of good technical turns. This is probably one of the best rides in all of Vermont.
Start out in Bristol and head out VT-116 to "baby gap". "Baby Gap" is a 2 mile long stretch of twisties that provides a good warm up for App-Gap, which comes a bit later.
At the end of Baby Gap you ride through some relaxing straights and sweepers. Take advantage of this time to rest up and enjoy the views of the backside of Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski areas.
When the view fades, put your mind back together for the climb through App-Gap. This very technical set of twisties is all mountain road. Hair pin turns and short straights. This will definitely put your skills to the test!
At the top of App-Gap, rest and enjoy the view to west. When you're ready to continue, head back down an equally interesting set of twisties on the east side. VT-17 joins VT-100 in Waitsfield (gas).
Route 100 can nice or hell, depending on the season and traffic. If you don't mind riding behind some slow moving tourists, anytime if fine. Otherwise, best try to hit VT-100 during off peak usages hours. The Granville gap on VT-100 is worth the pain of the traffic to get there. This nice set of sweepers and twisties wakes you back up again. Becareful of tourists in Granville area, as a recreation area crosses the road just about where the road is most fun.
Hancock village includes all of the nice amenities. Head back west again on VT-125 and climb up Middlebury gap, past the Robert Frost/Breadloaf place. VT-125 in Ripton is a great twisty section that is marred by rough pavement and traffic. Look for the speed trap in Ripton center! In East Middlebury you turn north and head up VT-116. This section of "Interstate" 116 features sweepers linked together by 1/4 to 1/2 mile straight aways. The Sycamore Park at the 1 lane bridge on VT-116 provides a nice rest area, complete with river and picnic benches.
